That single comparison is the reason this protocol leads with the wake time instead of the hours in bed. Two honest glosses. First, these are observational associations: people who sleep on a reliable schedule tend to live more structured lives overall, and no adjustment fully removes that confound. Second, the comparison says nothing about the exact tolerance — it says the direction is real.

What the ±30-Minute Rule Is, and Isn't

The protocol's tolerance band — wake within ±30 to 60 minutes of your chosen time, weekends included — is a piece of practical synthesis, and it is worth being direct about that. Social-jetlag research shows that the gap between weekday and weekend sleep timing is where the measurable associations live (Wittmann et al., Chronobiology International, 2006), and a separate five-year analysis found a heavier BMI among chronic social jetlaggers (Roenneberg et al., Current Biology, 2012). That supports the direction: shrink the weekday–weekend gap. It does not hand you a tested optimum between 30 and 60 minutes. The band is chosen because it is tight enough to protect the clock and lenient enough that normal life — one late dinner, one slow Saturday — does not force a failure.
