Direct morning sun runs 50,000 to 100,000 lux; bright overcast still delivers roughly 10,000; a window seat indoors drops toward 2,000; an ordinary lit room sits around 300–500. Here is the honest math: to match ten minutes outside, you would need two hours or more of bright indoor lighting. That arithmetic, more than any habit lecture, is why the prescription says outdoors.

Two working notes on reading the table. First, lux measures what reaches the eyes, so a west-facing window at 8 a.m. delivers less than the same window at noon — the morning dose is about the light actually present at your wake time, not the room's general brightness.
