The 90-Minute Nap: When You Need a Full Cycle

Catch-Up Sleep: What Weekends Can and Can't Repay
The weekend lie-in is real medicine, but it's partial medicine. Controlled studies of catch-up sleep find it restores some function and reduces sleepiness — while leaving other costs of the short-sleep week in place.

Shift Work: The Practical Protocol
Shift work is genuinely hard on the body — the honest framing is mitigation, not cure. The lever that matters most is light, because light is what tells your clock when "day" is.

Jet Lag: East Is Harder Than West
Your clock shifts more easily in one direction than the other. Delaying — staying up later — is the body's natural drift; advancing is hard work, which is why eastward travel costs more than westward.
- 🧭 The rule of thumb — roughly a day per time zone crossed eastward, about half a day per zone westward. A six-zone trip east can take a week to fully settle; the same trip west, three to four days.
- 💡 Light timing flips by direction — eastward: seek morning light, avoid evening light. Westward: seek evening light, avoid early-morning light. This is the one jet-lag rule to write down before flying.
- 🛬 On arrival — stay awake until the destination's evening, then sleep; keep any naps under 20 minutes; eat and exercise on the new clock from the first morning.
- ✈️ Short hops — trips under about three time zones rarely need a protocol beyond waking at destination time and getting morning light.
Who Should Not Nap
