The cleanest experiment on nap length is a small but careful one: after a night of sleep restricted to about five hours, healthy adults took a 10-, 20-, or 30-minute afternoon nap, and researchers tracked reaction time and self-reported sleepiness for hours afterward (Brooks & Lack, Sleep, 2006). The 10- and 20-minute naps improved performance and reduced sleepiness shortly after waking and kept the benefit for the next few hours. The 30-minute nap did not look better — it looked briefly worse, because of what happens when sleep exits light stages.
