The camping experiments made the light mechanism vivid. When researchers moved people into natural light-dark conditions, their clocks advanced within days; a follow-up study showed the same weekend pattern in miniature — just two days of weekend light habits measurably delayed melatonin onset and sleep timing (Wright et al., 2013; Stothard et al., 2017). Your Saturday is a camping trip in reverse: late sleep plus late light equals a clock that has drifted west by the time Sunday evening arrives.

The Monday Tax

The cleanest evidence that small clock mismatches carry real cardiovascular cost comes from a natural experiment: the daylight-saving transition. When Sweden springs forward an hour, registry data show myocardial infarction incidence rises about 5% in the following week — with the pattern concentrated in the first three weekdays (Janszky & Ljung, 2008). A later meta-analysis confirmed the effect is real but modest (Manfredini et al., 2019). That is one hour, imposed once a year. Sleep-ins Feel Great. The Problem Is the Phase.

Here is the part most advice gets wrong: the Saturday lie-in is doing two things at once, one good and one bad. It repays sleep debt — real, useful, welcome — while simultaneously delaying your circadian phase, which makes next week's debt larger. Monday's fog is the interest payment. The literature is genuinely divided on whether weekend recovery is net positive or negative. What both sides agree on: the size of the gap is the problem to manage, not the existence of weekends.
