Sets & the Volume Math
Ten to twenty hard sets per muscle per week is the band that runs through the program — and it is one of the better-documented numbers in resistance training. This page shows where that figure comes from, what counts as a set, where the dose-response accelerates and flattens, and how a two-day full-body week lands inside it.
What the evidence supports
- A meta-analysis of dose-response studies found weekly volumes of 10+ sets per muscle produced significantly greater hypertrophy than fewer sets, with diminishing returns per added set (Schoenfeld 2017).
- Strength followed a similar shape: moderate volumes beat both very low and very high volumes in a 2003 meta-analysis (Rhea 2003).
- Multiple sets beat single sets for hypertrophy by roughly 40% in a 2010 meta-analysis (Krieger 2010), and the set count, not the set length, drives the response (Baz-Valle 2021).
What remains uncertain
- Where the plateau sits for individuals — the top of the documented response is fuzzy, recovery-dependent, and probably lower for beginners.

The Dose Is Per Muscle, Per Week
Volume math fails the moment the units are wrong. The program's band — 10–20 sets — is not per exercise, per session, or per day. It is hard working sets per muscle group per week, counted the way the dose-response trials counted them:
- 🧮 A set is a working set — warm-up rungs and ramp-test attempts do not count. The dose-response literature counts the sets that end within striking distance of failure.
- 💪 The unit is the muscle, not the exercise — a squat, a leg press, and a lunge all pay into the same quads-and-glutes ledger. Count across exercises.

What the Dose-Response Shows
The central finding, from a 2017 meta-analysis that stratified weekly sets into bands (Schoenfeld 2017): more sets up to a point produce more growth, and the curve bends hard. Gains accelerate up to about 10 sets per muscle per week, keep rising more slowly to roughly 15–20, and the evidence thins out beyond — where recovery cost climbs faster than the curve.
- 📈 The acceleration zone — moving from almost no volume to 5–10 sets per muscle is where the biggest per-set gains live; beginners get most of their growth here.
- 📉 The flattening zone — past roughly 15 sets per muscle, each added set buys less; the meta-analysis authors themselves caution against chasing the tail (Schoenfeld 2017).

The Weekly-Set Ledger, Worked
Here is what the band looks like on the program's own two-day full-body schedule. Per pattern, 2–4 working sets per session, twice a week:

Add in one isolation exercise per session and most muscles land between 10 and 15 weekly sets — comfortably inside the band, with headroom to grow into it. The ledger is a planning tool, not a purity test: a week at 8 sets beats a skipped week at 12, and the volume page's own arithmetic is designed to survive real life rather than demand it.
A worked example shows how quickly the arithmetic adds up. One full-body day of squat (3 sets), hinge (3), push (3), pull (3), and carry (2) pays the quads about 6 hard sets for the day; run that twice and the week is 12 — mid-band — before a single isolation curl, lateral raise, or calf raise gets logged. That is why the program's default dose works without a spreadsheet: the structure is the math.
When More Sets Stop Paying
The top end of the band is where the honesty requirement lives. The literature's clearest statements: multiple sets clearly beat single sets (roughly 40% more growth, Krieger 2010), and the response keeps rising through the teens — but beyond about 20 weekly sets per muscle, trials stop showing meaningful added growth, and every extra set draws on the same recovery budget:

Questions, Answered Briefly
- ❓ Is more always better? — Up to a point, per the dose-response data; past roughly 20 weekly sets per muscle the trials stop showing gains and the recovery bill arrives. More is a lever, not a virtue.
- ❓ Do warm-up sets count? — No. They are the price of admission, not the dose. If your log counts them, your 10–20 band is really 6–14 and the math is lying to you.
- ❓ Is a set at RIR 5 the same as a set at RIR 1? — For the volume ledger, no: the dose-response numbers assume sets near failure. Easy sets train skill and blood flow, but they do not pay the growth account.
- ❓ Do I need to count chest, back, and legs separately? — Yes — the band is per muscle, because muscles are the units that grow. A bench-heavy week can hit 14 chest sets while the back sits at 6; the ledger is where that imbalance shows up first.
- ❓ How do I add sets without wrecking the week? — One set to one pattern at a time, only when that pattern has stalled on the log for a couple of weeks, and never while sleep or soreness budgets are overdrawn.

🧮 Volume is a budget, not a tally
The 10–20 band works because it is honest twice: honest about what counts (hard sets, per muscle, per week) and honest about the other side of the ledger (recovery, protein, sleep). Staying inside the band with quality beats blasting past it with sloppy sets — the dose-response curve awards the middle, and the middle is where the program lives.
