RPE & Leaving Reps in Reserve

Reps in reserve — RIR — is the effort dial every number on this site assumes: stop a set with 1–3 reps still in the tank, and you get nearly all of the stimulus with a fraction of the fatigue. This page walks the evidence behind that claim, the RIR-based RPE scale that makes it usable, and the one debate that refuses to die: should you ever train to failure?

What the evidence supports

  • Sets stopped 1–3 reps short of failure produced strength and hypertrophy gains comparable to failure training in a 2022 meta-analysis, with less fatigue (Grgic 2022).
  • The RIR-based RPE scale gives lifters a usable 1–10 effort language, including for lighter loads; estimation error of a rep or two is normal and trainable (Zourdos 2016).
  • Near-failure effort is the equalizer across rep ranges — the same condition the rep-continuum and volume math depend on (Schoenfeld 2017).

What remains uncertain

  • Whether regular brief exposure to true failure on compound lifts helps or harms long-term progress — trials are short and the results mixed.
  • How accurate RIR estimates stay late in a session, when fatigue quietly shifts the dial; research suggests drift, not disaster.

What RIR Actually Is

Reps in reserve answers one question at the end of every set: how many more clean reps could you have done? "RIR 2" means you stopped with two honest reps left. RIR-based RPE is the same idea on a 10-point scale — a 10 is failure, a 9 is one rep in reserve, an 8 is two — and it was validated as a training tool in the scale's original research (Zourdos 2016).

The Failure Debate, Settled Enough

The loudest question in the gym — do I have to train to failure? — has a meta-analytic answer. A 2022 meta-analysis pooled the trials comparing failure and non-failure training and found no significant advantage for failure on either strength or muscle growth, while non-failure training consistently carried less fatigue (Grgic 2022). That is as settled as this literature gets:

The Effort Trade-Off, Drawn

The RIR decision looks like a curve: growth stimulus holds steady through the working zone and only thins out at generous reserves, while fatigue climbs steeply as the tank empties. The reasonable place to live is where stimulus is still high and fatigue is still low — RIR 1–3.

Read the plot as a map, not a measurement: the stimulus line barely moves from RIR 3 down to RIR 1 — the zone is cheap — while the fatigue line is already climbing steeply. The last rep is where the bill arrives, and it arrives in the currency the recovery budget has to cover: sleep quality, next-session performance, and soreness you did not schedule.

The verdicts are the program's defaults: nearly all working sets live at RIR 1–3, compounds lean toward the two-and-three side, and failure is a scheduled treat on safe isolations — not an everyday event. The scheme's exact assignments live on the Reps, Sets & Weights page.

Why 1–3 and Not Always 0

Three arguments stack on top of the meta-analysis. The first is arithmetic: if failure adds no growth but adds fatigue, it is a losing trade on nearly every set. The second is honesty: RIR estimation error is a rep or two, so aiming for RIR 0 frequently lands sets past failure, where form decides against you. The third is progression: double progression — the program's engine — reads RIR from the log, and a log full of grind is a log with no signal.

RIR guidance is effort coaching — it cannot diagnose, and it does not know your heart, your joints, or your meds. If a set ever brings sharp pain, chest tightness, or dizziness, stop and talk to a clinician; if you manage a chronic condition, get clearance before training with hard efforts. The dial presumes a body cleared to turn it.
