Why "Both at Once" Is a Special Case

The four-week trial above worked because its participants were young, untrained men eating a very high protein intake while doing intense training. Those conditions matter. Reviews of the body-recomposition literature — most directly Barakat et al. in the Strength and Conditioning Journal (2020) — find simultaneous lean gain and fat loss is most reliably observed in people who are new to training or carry more body fat, and it becomes slower and smaller as training experience and leanness increase.
