When a Supplement Distorts the Lab Result
A subtler interaction happens before diagnosis: high-dose biotin — hair-skin-nail products can contain up to 650 times the recommended daily intake — interferes with immunoassays for troponin (the heart-attack marker) and thyroid hormones. The FDA has warned that falsely low troponin has contributed to at least one missed diagnosis and death (FDA safety communication, 2019).
