Most supplement conversations ask one question: does it work? This page asks the two questions that come first — is the bottle actually what the label claims, and is taking it safe for you? Product verification and evidence of benefit are separate judgments, and marketing blends them constantly. Here they stay separate, all the way down.

The Label Is Not the Product

Since the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, supplements in the United States are regulated closer to food than to drugs. Manufacturers do not need FDA pre-approval to sell a product; the agency bears the burden of proving harm after it reaches shelves. Labels may carry "structure-function" claims — supports immune health, promotes energy — provided the fine print says the FDA has not evaluated them. The result is the frame for this whole page: a label is a claim about intent, not a certificate about contents. How to read this table: the verdicts rate each check's reliability for a typical healthy adult shopping in 2026, not your personal result. The two severe badges mark the checks most often mistaken for something they are not — a claim mistaken for evidence, and a personal risk question mistaken for a shopping decision.

What a Seal Verifies — and What It Doesn't

Third-party certification is the closest thing supplement shopping has to a real inspection, and it is genuinely worth preferring: NSF, USP Verified, and Informed Sport programs test products against their labels for identity, dose, and a list of contaminants, and Informed Sport adds banned-substance screening that matters for tested athletes. But the seal's limits deserve equal billing. Testing is batch-level and periodic, not every bottle. Contaminant lists cover known offenders, not everything. And the seal says nothing — cannot say anything — about whether the verified ingredient does what marketing implies. A certified product is verified, not validated. That distinction is the whole safety law of this page.

Missing Ingredients, Undeclared Ingredients

The audits that exist are not reassuring. A 2009 Government Accountability Office investigation sampled 40 herbal supplements and found trace amounts of lead and pesticide residues — mostly below acute-risk thresholds, but present. A New England Journal of Medicine commentary (Cohen, 2014) traced the harm pathway: an amphetamine-like stimulant marketed as natural for years, and a 2013 hepatitis outbreak tied to a fat-burner that left dozens hospitalized — products recalled only after the damage. A contested 2015 New York Attorney General DNA analysis of store-brand herbs found most samples lacked DNA of the labeled plant; experts criticized the method's fit for extracts, but the episode pushed major retailers to demand verification. The honest summary: contamination and mislabeling are documented, the market-wide rate is unknown, and the worst outcomes cluster in products making the boldest claims — weight loss, sports performance, sexual enhancement.

Put every bottle, tea, and gummy you actually take into one bag and walk it to a pharmacist — a free fifteen minutes that catches most stacking and interaction problems. It is also the single habit that makes the recall notices legible: you cannot check whether your bottle is from a bad batch if you no longer know what brand it was.

The Bottom Line

  1. Two questions, never one: "verified" tells you the bottle matches its label; only outcome evidence — the kind scored on the Big Five page — tells you it belongs in your routine. A seal upgrades quality, not efficacy.
  2. Buy the seal, read the back: prefer NSF- or USP-verified products, skip proprietary blends when the dose is the question, and check the chemical form against the studied one.
  3. Count the stack quarterly: tally every source — pills plus fortified foods — by nutrient. Most people can't recount their own stack; the audit worksheet fixes that.
