The traditional frameworks always knew this (the Buddhist maps describe "difficult territory" along the path); the scientific literature is only recently catching up. The practical guidance: start gently, scale slowly, and treat meditation like any intervention — if practice makes you feel worse, stop or change it, and talk to someone who knows both meditation and mental health.
