How Much Nature, How Often

"Get outside more" is not a dose. In 2019 a team led by Mathew White gave the nature-and-health field its first usable number: roughly 120 minutes of nature contact per week is where better self-reported health and wellbeing reliably appear, with gains peaking near 200 to 300 minutes and flattening after. The Study Behind the Number

The source is the Monitor of Engagement with the Natural Environment, an ongoing English survey that interviews a fresh, nationally representative sample every week about outdoor recreation. White and colleagues drew 19,806 respondents from the 2014-2016 waves and asked a simple question: how much time did you spend in natural places last week, and how do you rate your health and wellbeing? They then sorted people into 60-minute bands — zero, 1-59 minutes, 60-119, 120-179, and so on — and compared each band against the zero-contact group. Crucially, the models adjusted for neighborhood greenness around the home plus individual and area factors, so the result tracks what people actually did, not just where they live — the distinction the epidemiology page spends a whole section on.

Below 120 minutes, no band looked reliably different from no nature contact. At 120-179 minutes the odds of good health were 1.59 times and of high wellbeing 1.23 times those of the no-contact group. The finding is a threshold in the statistical sense — the first band where the confidence intervals clear 1.0 — not a switch your biology flips at minute 120.

What the Chart Does and Does Not Say

Three honest limits before anyone prints this on a poster. First, the y-variable is self-rated health and wellbeing — one question each, answered from memory. Those measures track mortality in large cohorts, but they are not blood pressure, cortisol curves, or diagnosed disease. Second, the survey is cross-sectional: one week of recall, one snapshot of health, no follow-up. It cannot tell you whether nature made people healthier or healthier people wandered into parks — reverse causation is a live option, since fatigue and chronic illness keep people indoors. Third, the figure comes from one country's survey. The authors themselves frame the goal as eventual nature-contact guidelines "comparable to those for physical activity," and call prospective and intervention studies the critical next step — not there yet. What it does establish is the curve's shape — flat, rising, saturating — in a large representative sample with the covariates adjusted away.

One Long Dose or Many Small Ones?

The most practical finding is packaging-independence: a Saturday two-hour hike and six scattered twenty-minute park loops landed in the same place. The survey cannot say much about frequency or single-session length beyond that — the weekly total is what the analysis was built on. The nearest per-visit data are smaller: an experience-sampling study of 36 urban dwellers found cortisol dropped most efficiently per minute during nature sessions of roughly 20 to 30 minutes (Hunter et al., Frontiers in Psychology, 2019), and a Brisbane dose analysis linked long visits (30 minutes or more) with less depression and high blood pressure, frequent visits with social cohesion (Shanahan et al., Scientific Reports, 2016). Different designs, different endpoints — stitched together they suggest a few visits a week of at least 20-30 minutes each, but no single study has randomized the packaging.

Is the Dose Even Causal?

Association is not prescription. Reverse causation: illness, low mood, and fatigue reduce outdoor time, so part of the gradient is health driving nature contact rather than the reverse. Residual confounding: people with two free hours a week for parks differ from people without them in income, job flexibility, and neighborhood, and adjustment bends without breaking that. And there is no trial — nobody has randomized adults to 120 versus 60 versus zero weekly minutes and followed them, the design that would make the number a guideline rather than an association.

⚠️ When nature time is not the missing piece

If low mood, exhaustion, or loss of interest is what keeps you indoors, a park prescription is not the treatment plan. Persistent low mood, anxiety that blocks leaving the house, or exhaustion that rest and green time do not touch is clinician territory — treat nature contact as a complement to care, never a substitute for it.

Reading "Nature Deficit" Skeptically

The dose findings are now wrapped in a narrative — humans drifting from their "natural" state, cities as pathology, recovery as re-wilding. Some of that story survives the data: the curves flatten, the mechanism candidates are real. But the frame smuggles in assumptions the evidence does not hold. There is no measured baseline of how much nature a human "needs" — 120 minutes is where a survey association turned on, not a biological requirement. The romantic version also shrugs off who has access: safe parks, free time, and green neighborhoods are unevenly distributed, so "spend more time outside" can be advice that is cheap for the advice-giver. The sturdier reading treats nature contact like exercise — a behavior with a plausible dose-response curve, worth engineering into your week at whatever dose your life allows — rather than a return to an original condition.
