- 📉 Confirm two flat weekly averages. Seven-day means, not individual mornings. Fourteen days of a flat trend line is the pass/fail.

Step 2 — Audit the Ledger
This is the step that resolves most genuine stalls, and it is deliberately boring: walk a week of your own logs looking for the five classic drift points. Each one is small by itself and large in total.

That is a 150–250 kcal/day gap between the deficit you intended and the one you have. A modest recompute-and-trim — 100–200 kcal off, steps on — is usually all the biological truth requires.
Step 4 — Restore the Movement and Recovery Layers
The last two checks are the ones most people skip because they feel like lifestyle advice rather than diet science. They are not optional.
- 🚶 Count the actual steps. Non-exercise activity quietly deflates in a deficit — the same commute, but a slower walk, fewer trips, more sitting. A week of step data beats a guess, and 2,000–3,000 added steps typically out-earns the entire adaptation headwind.
