The break is not a refeed (a one-to-two-day higher-carb pause, usually below maintenance), and it is emphatically not a fortnight off the plan. Its purpose is specific: relieve the pressure a long deficit has built — hunger, low energy, creeping frustration — so that when you resume the cut, it actually works again.

The trial people cite is the MATADOR study — "Minimising Adaptive Thermogenesis And Deactivating Obesity Rebound" — which randomized men with obesity to either continuous dieting or two-week diet blocks alternated with two-week maintenance periods (Byrne et al., International Journal of Obesity, 2018). The headline: the alternating group lost more fat for the same total diet-weeks, and reported better retention. It is a serious, well-run study with a small sample, and its design tested something close to what this page recommends. What it does not do is prove the break repairs metabolism — the better retention and the shorter continuous-deficit stretches are plausible explanations on their own.
