The origin story is uncomfortable: no trial, no systematic review, no guideline. The number appears to be a round figure that circulated through forums and articles until repetition made it look measured. It survives because it feels scientific — a precise number implies an experiment. What the acute studies actually measured is different: insulin responses to food are continuous, starting at the first real grams of carbohydrate or protein and scaling with the load. A threshold implies a switch. The data show a dial.

For the 50-calorie rule to be real, three things would have to be true at once: a specific calorie load would have to flip measurable fasting markers; that flip would have to change an outcome that matters (weight, glucose, ketone levels, or the unmeasurable autophagy question); and the flip would have to sit at a number consistent enough to quote. The available evidence supports none of the three. What exists instead is a slope: small loads produce small bumps that mostly wash out by the next hour, and large loads produce large bumps that define the fed state.
This is why the question never goes away. Every fasting community wants one clean line, and biology keeps supplying a curve. The practical consequence: your line has to be chosen, then held consistently — not discovered in a lab report that does not exist.
