What the evidence supports

What a Chain Is
A chain is two or more stacks in sequence, written so that the end of one link is the cue for the next. The first link starts from a fixed, unchanging anchor — the alarm, the dinner plate, the front door — and every link after it starts from the action you just completed. A three-link morning chain reads: "After my alarm, I drink a glass of water; after the water, I brush my teeth; after brushing, I do ten squats." The chain turns a set of separate resolutions into a single flowing routine, and the routine is what eventually runs without any deliberation at all.
A chain has more moving parts than a single stack, and each part inherits the failure modes of every link before it — which is why the design rules that follow are stricter than the single-stack rules.

Rules of Chain Design
Designing a chain that survives contact with a real week comes down to a handful of rules, all of which follow from the mechanism above. They are stated as decisions to make before the chain ever runs:

⛓️ One new link per week
The rule that separates chains that last from chains that collapse is pacing. Add one link, run the chain with it for seven to ten days, and only then attach the next link. This is the chain version of the one-habit-at-a-time rule in the series — it exists because a chain concentrates risk, and the risk is a cascade: link two fails, the anchor after it never fires, and the whole sequence quietly dies. Failure and the Restart Rule
