Lean Mass, Protein, and Training on 5:2 and ADF

A restricted day creates a calorie deficit, and every calorie deficit raises the same question: how much of the weight lost is muscle? The honest answer for 5:2 and alternate-day fasting is that lean-mass changes track the weight lost — no preservation magic, and no disproportionate loss either — provided the two levers that actually protect muscle are in place. Those levers are a daily protein floor and resistance training placed on the right days. The Protein Math on a Restricted Day

At 75 kg that is 120–165 grams per day. A 500–600 kcal restricted day holds maybe a third of that unless it is designed around protein, which is the whole game: the restricted day's calories must be spent on protein first, or the week's average drifts under the floor.

The Per-Meal Ceiling and the Distribution Question

Restricted days compress eating into one small window, which collides with a second finding: the muscle-building response to a single meal has a ceiling around 0.24 g/kg in younger adults and 0.40 g/kg in older adults (Moore, Journals of Gerontology A, 2015). Long-term muscle quality, strength retention beyond a year, and the effects in older adults are likewise open.
