That fuel shift is real and measurable during the session. What the trials have consistently failed to find is the payoff: a systematic review and meta-analysis of fasted versus fed aerobic exercise concluded that body-composition changes do not differ meaningfully between the two (Schoenfeld, JISSN, 2014). Burning more fat during the workout did not translate into more fat lost by the end of the study, because a day's fat balance settles over twenty-four hours, not over the one class where the tracker logged it.

For steady sessions — walking, jogging, easy cycling, zone-2 work — the evidence and the experience agree: fasted is fine. The honest appeal of fasted morning cardio is scheduling: the session is done before the window opens, the shower happens once, and the first meal lands immediately after the workout, when muscle is most receptive to protein.
For hard intervals and long endurance efforts, the picture tilts. Some fasted trials show small performance decrements at high intensities and long durations (Aird, Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, 2018), which makes sense mechanistically — top-end work runs on glycogen, and the fasted morning has less of it. The rule that survives: place quality sessions inside the window or after the first meal, and let the fasted hours carry the easy volume. Lifting on 16/8: What the Trials Say
The worry that 16/8 eats muscle has been tested directly, and the small trials that combined time-restricted feeding with resistance training are reassuring. Session placement still matters for feel. Heavy compounds fasted — low glycogen, no morning meal — feel weaker for many lifters, and a session that feels weak trains weaker. The Real Limits
Fasted training has hard edges, and this page will not soften them.
